What are the core ideas of the Tao Te Ching? How should a beginner read it?

I want to start studying the Tao Te Ching. Although it is only 5,000 characters, it is very profound. What are the core ideas? Where should a beginner start? Any recommended commentaries?

Core ideas of the Tao Te Ching: Dao follows nature (align with natural patterns, not forcing); Wu Wei (effortless action, not inaction); Softness overcomes hardness (yielding conquers rigid); Contentment brings happiness (reduce desires, return to simplicity); Reversal is the movement of Tao (things turn to their opposites when they reach extremes). For commentaries, I recommend starting with the Wang Bi commentary or Heshang Gong commentary. For modern readers, try Ellen Chen's translation or Red Pine's version.

Beginners should start with Chapters 1, 8, 25, 42, and 81 — these cover the most essential concepts. Read one or two chapters per day, savoring rather than rushing. Most importantly: feel with your heart rather than analyze with your mind — the Tao Te Ching is about intuitive understanding, not logical deduction.
