Compared to other religions: Buddhism sees life and death as suffering within reincarnation, seeking nirvana; Christianity views death as the gateway to eternal life; Taoism focuses on the quality of this present life, achieving unity of form and spirit through cultivation. This this-worldly orientation is why Taoism especially values health cultivation and medicine.

The Taoist view of life and death is unique: cherish life and dislike death, but do not fear death. "Chang sheng jiu shi" comes from the Tao Te Ching, meaning to live long and see clearly — emphasizing cherishing life and living it fully. However, this is not an escape from death. Zhuangzi said "Life and death are fated" — they are natural processes. Taoism seeks to live out one's natural lifespan, not to cling to life in fear.
