Does "Wu Wei" (non-action) mean doing nothing?

"Wu Wei" is an important concept in Taoism, but many misinterpret it as passivity and laziness. What is the true meaning of Wu Wei? How can modern people practice Wu Wei in work and life?

Wu Wei absolutely does NOT mean lying flat and doing nothing! Wu Wei means not forcing, not overacting — acting in accordance with nature. Laozi said "Practice Wu Wei, and nothing will remain ungoverned." Wu Wei is like the Butcher Ding carving an ox — following the natural grain, the knife stays sharp for nineteen years. Find the natural patterns in things and move with them rather than forcing against them.

Modern application: At work, it's not about doing nothing but not doing busywork — identify what matters and do the right things. In life, it's not about not trying but not struggling against yourself — work with your natural rhythm and talents. The wisdom of Wu Wei is "Only by letting go can you take hold."
