Zhan zhuang, breath work, and Tai Chi are all essentially qi training. Qi is not mysticism — when you stand in zhan zhuang for ten minutes and feel warmth spreading and your palms tingling, that is the sensation of Qi moving.

Qi is both material and spiritual — the unified term for life energy and cosmic energy. Taoism distinguishes multiple levels of Qi: Yuan Qi (primordial qi — the most fundamental life energy from one's parents); Zong Qi (pectoral qi — the combination of breath and food-derived qi); Ying Qi (nutritive qi — circulates in the vessels nourishing the body); Wei Qi (defensive qi — circulates on the surface protecting the body). Cultivation is the process of preserving Yuan Qi, strengthening Zong Qi, and harmonizing Ying and Wei Qi.
