Alan Mathison Turing was born in London on June 23, 1912. From an early age, he showed exceptional talent in mathematics and science, solving advanced problems while still a schoolboy.
In 1936, while at King's College Cambridge, he published his seminal paper "On Computable Numbers," introducing the concept of a "Universal Machine" — now known as the Turing Machine. This theoretical device became the foundation for all modern computers.
During World War II, Turing worked at Bletchley Park as the head of Hut 8, where he designed an electromechanical machine (the Bombe) that cracked the German Enigma code. Historians estimate this shortened the war by two years and saved over 14 million lives.
After the war, he designed the ACE computer, developed early artificial intelligence concepts including the famous "Turing Test," and pioneered the field of mathematical biology with his work on morphogenesis.
Turing was prosecuted for homosexuality in 1952, subjected to chemical castration as an alternative to prison, and died in 1954 at age 41. In 2013, Queen Elizabeth II granted him a posthumous royal pardon. Today, he is rightly celebrated as a hero of science and humanity.
