Louis Pasteur

1822年12月27日 — 1895年09月28日 (Age72岁)
Birthplace:Dole, Jura, France Resting Place:Pasteur Institute, Paris, France
Louis Pasteur was born in Dole, France, on December 27, 1822. Initially an average student more interested in fishing than studies, he later discovered a passion for chemistry that would change the course of medical history.

He began by studying fermentation and disproved the theory of spontaneous generation, proving that microorganisms cause spoilage. This led to the process of pasteurization — heating liquids to kill harmful bacteria — which is still used worldwide in milk, wine, and food preservation.

His germ theory of disease revolutionized medicine. Pasteur turned his attention to infectious diseases, developing the first vaccines for chicken cholera, anthrax, and rabies. In 1885, he administered the rabies vaccine to a young boy, Joseph Meister, who had been bitten by a rabid dog — and saved his life.

The Pasteur Institute, founded in 1888, continues his mission today, and has produced 10 Nobel Prize laureates. He believed deeply that science should serve humanity, and his work has saved countless millions of lives.

His work on fermentation saved the French wine industry. Not all heroes wear capes — some wear lab coats.

"Chance favors the prepared mind" is my favorite scientific quote. Pasteur prepared his whole life.

The story of Joseph Meister — the boy bitten by a rabid dog whom Pasteur saved — makes me tear up every time.

Developing vaccines for anthrax AND rabies? In the 19th century? The man was operating decades ahead of his time.

He disproved spontaneous generation once and for all. It's hard to imagine that people once believed that maggots just appeared from rotting meat.
