Marie Curie

1867年11月07日 — 1934年07月04日 (Age66岁)
Birthplace:Warsaw, Kingdom of Poland (then Russian Empire) Resting Place:Panthéon, Paris, France
Maria Skłodowska, later known as Marie Curie, was born in Warsaw, Poland, on November 7, 1867. From a young age, she showed a brilliant aptitude for science, overcoming poverty and gender barriers to pursue her education in Paris.

Working in a crude laboratory with her husband Pierre Curie, she discovered two new elements: polonium (named after her homeland) and radium. In 1903, she became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, sharing the Physics prize with Pierre and Henri Becquerel.

After Pierre's tragic death in 1906, she continued their work alone. In 1911, she won a second Nobel Prize — this time in Chemistry — for her isolation of pure radium. She remains the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two scientific fields.

During World War I, she developed mobile X-ray units (called "petites Curies") to help battlefield surgeons, personally driving them to the front lines. Her daughter Irène also went on to win a Nobel Prize.

She died in 1934 from aplastic anemia caused by long-term radiation exposure. Her legacy lives on in every radiology department, cancer treatment center, and in the hearts of women in science everywhere.

Marie Curie broke through barriers that seemed insurmountable. A woman winning two Nobel Prizes in an era when women couldn't even vote — absolutely extraordinary.

Reading about her early days in Paris — living in a freezing garret, surviving on bread and tea while studying at the Sorbonne. Such determination.

Her notebooks are still radioactive today! That's how dedicated she was — handling radium with her bare hands for the sake of science.

AnonymousBeautifully said. I couldn't agree more. 2 months ago

She literally gave her life for science, dying from radiation exposure. That level of dedication is almost beyond comprehension.

She named polonium after her homeland Poland. Even at the height of her fame, she never forgot where she came from.

The mobile X-ray units she drove to the front lines in WWI saved thousands of soldiers. A true hero on multiple fronts.

The Curie Museum in Paris is a must-visit. Her laboratory has been preserved and it's incredibly inspiring.
